17. Remove the bolt from the hole in the cylinder block and remove the timing chain tensioner shoe.

18. Using a 10 mm wrench, unscrew the limiting pin and remove the timing chain.

19. Using a puller, press the sprocket from the toe of the crankshaft.
20. Check the condition of the timing chain links. The rollers should not have chips, cracks or other mechanical damage.

Installing a timing chain on a VAZ 2107 car engine
1. Install the sprocket on the toe of the crankshaft.
2. Check the alignment of the marks on the cylinder block and the crankshaft sprocket.
3. Lubricate the new chain with engine oil and place it on the crankshaft sprocket.
4. Install the timing chain stop pin.
5. Install the sprocket with the chain on the auxiliary drive shaft according to the previously applied marks, tensioning the drive branch of the timing chain.
6. While holding the sprocket from rotating, without tightening it, tighten the fastening bolt.
7. We hook the timing chain with a wire hook and lift it to the camshaft.
8. We put the chain on the camshaft sprocket, and the sprocket on the shaft, ensuring that the marks match.
9. Without tightening, tighten the bolt securing the camshaft sprocket.
10. “Charge” the timing chain tensioner and, having installed it in its original place, “discharge”
11. Turn off the gear and turn the crankshaft two or three turns, paying attention to the coincidence of the marks. Otherwise, we repeat installing the timing chain on the VAZ 2107 engine again.
12. If the marks coincide, engage first gear, tighten the sprocket mounting bolts and lock them by bending the petals of the lock washers.
13. Tighten the cap nut of the timing chain tensioner (see “Timing chain tensioner - replacement”).
14. Installation of all removed parts on the engine of a VAZ 2107 car is carried out in the reverse order.

Hi all! I dedicate this post to the owners of the domestic automobile industry, or more precisely to the owners of the VAZ 2107, if the time has come to replace the timing chain of the VAZ 2107.

And so they began. To make it more convenient to change the chain on the machine, first remove the cooling radiator (you don’t have to remove it), as well as the valve cover of the head. Now we need to align the mark on the camshaft gear and the casting on the bearing housing. Next, loosen the generator mount and remove the V-belt, unscrew and remove the water pump pulley.
Remove the camshaft chain tensioner. Now you need to unlock the camshaft sprocket bolt and remove the chain from the sprocket, as well as the crankshaft pulley itself.

Using any 10 mm wrench, unscrew the three bolts securing the pan to the front cover

Now you need to remove the front cover, after unscrewing three bolts and six nuts

Next, remove the tensioner shoe, having previously unscrewed the nut with a 17mm wrench

Unlock the washer of the oil pump drive gear and distributor and unscrew it with a 17 mm wrench

We remove the bolt and remove the gear along with the camshaft drive chain. Don't forget to unscrew the limiting bolt with a 10mm wrench, otherwise it won't allow you to remove it.

Well, in general, here is the order of disassembly. And I almost forgot to say that it is better to immediately change the small sprocket on the crankshaft, since it is often very worn out and will quickly “eat” it when installing a new chain. Assembly is carried out in reverse order. After installing the chain, press the tensioner shoe and tension the timing chain. Naturally, after assembly, you need to check that all installation marks match (the crankshaft sprocket and the mark on the block, on the camshaft sprocket and the bearing housing.

Finally, you need to charge the chain tensioner and install it in place and tension the timing chain. Adjust the ignition timing by manipulating the distributor.

After a certain mileage, it is necessary to replace the timing chain on a VAZ 2107. Most owners of this car do it themselves, despite the fact that the process is labor-intensive, physically difficult and requires certain skills. The chain must be replaced when the pitch between its links increases. Purely technically, this manifests itself in interruptions at idle. Having noticed such a phenomenon, you need to examine the circuit on board. If the bearing mark matches the corresponding one on the timing sprocket, and the pulley mark is lower than the one on the engine cover, it’s time to change the chain itself.

This can also be caused by cracks in the brush or chips in the bushing, even if the chain is not stretched. Neglecting this step may result in a toe, guide rail, or shoe corner breaking off. And even if distortions appear on the engine teeth, elongated chain links can lead to more serious damage.

Replacing the timing chain on a VAZ 2107 with your own hands can be done in the right and not entirely wrong way. To avoid mistakes, let's consider each of them.


How NOT to do it

The method is, of course, fast, but categorically unreliable. It is attractive because you don’t have to disassemble the engine. Both chains are disconnected: both the old and the new, after which they are collected into one long one. A “crooked starter” spins the chain until a new section takes its place on the engine. It is disconnected from the old one, closed and tensioned.

The bad thing is that this procedure does not make it possible to replace the tensioner shoe and lower sprocket, and in most cases they need it. And the strength of the chain itself is questionable after that.

Dismantling

The engine will have to be largely disassembled, but everything can be done efficiently, reliably, and you won’t have to return to the issue for a long time.

  • The cover is removed from the cylinder head;
  • The crankshaft is rotated until the marks on the housing and on the camshaft sprocket converge. In this case, the mark on the crankshaft should coincide with the mark on the camshaft cover;
  • The lock washer on the bolt fixing the camshaft sprocket is bent (a hammer and a strong screwdriver/chisel will help);
  • The fourth gear is engaged with the handbrake at the same time, the bolt is loosened, and the damper is released from the chain;
  • Behind it, the tensioner shoe is dismantled;
  • Now the stop washer on the sprocket of the additional units is bent, the corresponding bolt is unscrewed, and the said sprocket is removed;
  • Afterwards, under no circumstances should you turn the drive shaft: disturb the ignition setting;
  • The stopper pin is rolled up, followed by the camshaft star retaining bolt that is finally twisted. To remove it, you will have to lift the chain a little. Then it goes down and is removed from all the stars. At the same time, the one that relates to the crankshaft remains in place: you need to check on it whether the marks on it and the cylinder block have moved. If they are separated, the crankshaft rotates until they are aligned again;
  • In some cases, the star of the auxiliary units gets stuck. You will have to move it using a pry bar.

Installation

Before installation, do not forget to make sure that you have purchased a high-quality chain: its deflection should be within 7-10 mm, and all links and bushings should be hardened. If even only one of the elements is considered “raw” by you, it is better to choose another chain: the one in front of you will very soon also stretch out.

Many owners prefer to buy chains produced by Sachs: it is extremely unlikely that they will encounter defects in their products. However, we do not insist on this: the mention is inserted only for beginners who have not yet decided on their preferences.

  • The new part is put on the crankshaft sprocket that has not been removed;
  • Next comes the second, auxiliary units. After engaging it, the sprocket is placed on the drive shaft and secured with a bolt;
  • The chain is grabbed by the hook and pulled up, where the camshaft sprocket should be. The chain is pulled over it, and only then the sprocket is mounted in its rightful place;
  • The coincidence of all the above marks and the tension of the leading chain branch are checked;
  • The camshaft sprocket fasteners are attached;
  • Next, in turn, are installed: a damper, a chain tensioner shoe and a limit pin.

The transmission switches to neutral, the crankshaft rotates 3 turns in the direction in which it rotates when driving. Again, the matches of all risks are checked. If some marks do not match, the situation is corrected in accordance with the above material. If everything is in order, the cap nut on the tensioner is tightened, the gear is engaged and all the bolts are tightened. Everything that you have left in a disassembled state is put back in its place in the reverse order of disassembly. At this point, replacing the timing chain on a VAZ 2107 with your own hands can be considered complete.

The timing chain on the VAZ 2107 is one of the most important parts that requires monitoring its condition. When Lada family cars have a mileage of more than 60 thousand km, it is necessary to check this element. The old chain is dismantled, for which its links are disconnected, after which the end of the new chain is connected to one end. Next, use the key to turn the crankshaft until the old chain pulls the new one behind it and comes completely out of the engine. When this happens, disconnect the old chain and connect the two ends of the new one. With this replacement method, it is only possible to change the chain, but the sprockets, tensioner shoe and damper cannot be replaced.
